Discover San Casciano dei Bagni and its Thermal Baths

Infinity pool at San Casciano dei Bagni

Last weekend I took a tour in Siena surroundings and discovered its thermal baths. The last stop was San Casciano dei Bagni and the Thermal Baths of Fonteverde.

San Casciano dei Bagni

This little town is located in Southern Tuscany on the border between Umbria and Lazio, offering incredible views of Valdorcia. It’s one of the largest thermal baths in Europe and counts 42 natural springs of hot water.

And because of this, San Casciano dei Bagni has always played an important role in Tuscany. It was renowned by Entruscans and Romans, and in the Renaissance it attracted visitors from all around Europe. It was also very appreciated by Tuscany Grand Dukes, who built the main roads and thermal baths.

The center is lovely and maintained its medieval look with stone houses and narrows streets, as well as old doors and past decorations. There are several churches to be visited, such as the Insigne Collegiata di San Leonardo, Santa Maria della Colonna Church and the Conception Church.

Deserves to be visited also the Town Hall, that looks like a castle with its crennellated tower and several coat of arms on the facade. There is also the Arcipretura Palace, dating back to 14th century where several important figures stayed over the centuries.

It’s a really nice town, where is nice to walk and look around. Then from the main square you can have a stunning view of Valdorcia.

In addition if you want to really get the most out of your visit to San Casciano dei Bagni, you should visit the thermal baths of Fonteverde Resort & SPA. The location is incredible and the resort has been awarded as one of the best accommodations in the world.

In addition to the 5 star resort, there is the thermal baths offering a wide range of services for your wellness, relax and beauty. You can choose the best treatment for you when you arrive and have a full day for you and your partner or friends.

The thermal baths have different pools and circuits such as the Etruscan path combining sauna, hot-plate and Turkish bath, the hydromassage circuit, and open-air pool and waterfall with hot water at 42°. The waterfall offers a natural massage to the body and I can say that it’s really relaxing!

In addition to all this Fonteverde pool is open to children of any age, as well as cats and dogs. These features make it unique.

Surroudings

About 10 minutes driving there is Celle sul Rigo, a small medieval hamlet with a characteristic tower. There you can stay at Il Poggio farmhouse, a lovely accommodation renting holidays apartments and rooms.

This family-run farmhouse is located on top of a hill outside the village and has a great restaurant where you can taste local organic food as pici all’aglione. The vegetables come from the farm, as well as meat and oil, while pasta and bread are home made by Massimo, the chef.

The farm is also a ranch and you can take your horse with you for a green holiday, or you can ride the horses of il Poggio. Also your dog and cat can come with you. It really looks like the perfect family accommodation!
